Image Sources and Credits
Last updated:
We only use images that are in the public domain or that we are allowed to use under a free licence. Our images come from:
- Museum open-access collections, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution. These images are released under Creative Commons Zero (CC0).
- Free photo libraries, such as Unsplash, whose licence allows free use. We credit the photographers anyway.
We never embed images from other websites. Each image is downloaded, compressed to WebP, given a descriptive file name and hosted on our own server. We keep a log of every image with the page it appears on, its source, author, licence and the date we downloaded it. The list below is generated from that log.
If you are the author of one of these images and something is wrong, please contact us.
